Project Data

This project is designed to solve the problems encountered by GBIF Benin portal’s users. Those problems globally limit access to data, preclude data downloading and analysis as well as convivial information discovery... For its national portal, GBIF France has decided to use Altas of Living Australia tools. In order to help GBIF Benin to get a national portal with such features as download, occurrence search and mapping, we would like to propose the use of the module DataHub that belongs to the Atlas of Living Australia's architecture. This will enable GBIF Benin to get its own customized website with information pages and a search engine using GBIF France's back-end structure. The website will be hosted by the GBIF France as data will be already on GBIF France’s database.

Title Improvement of GBIF Benin portal to facilitate more access and data uses
Identifier CESP2017-0004
Funding The funding of this project is generously provided by the GBIF Secretariat
Study Area Description Data and metadata provided and published in the framework of this project are gathered throughout Benin
Design Description GBIF Benin and GBIF France have created a durable collaboration thanks to the SEP CEPDEC program (2008-2012) and to a joint training on data quality and mobilization organized by GBIF Benin in Cotonou in May 2015. This project will enable GBIF Benin to receive GBIF France guidance and technical support in order to strengthen the actual data mobilization strategy by making an outreach session with Beninese institutions, to mobilize and publish new data or data types (e.g. sample-based data) using tools developed by GBIF and following data quality best practices. This partnership will also give the possibility to improve the technical capacities of the beninese node and data providers by making a more technical workshop focusing on data uses with R and on data quality with OpenRefine, but also by putting in place a data portal based on Atlas of Living Australia. This last point will give GBIF Benin the possibility to enter the growing community of Living Atlases and to benefit from advices, technical workshops and experience coming from this international network. By recording the workshop and creating a course in the GBIF France training website, GBIF Benin will be able to reuse materials for future events. This mentoring project should benefit both nodes, acting as a mentor being also an important opportunity to foster the mentoring nodes’ own capacities especially in the GIS domain where GBIF Benin is leader. The language of the mentoring will be French; this should allow easier interactions between nodes staff, potential data providers and stakeholders. By the end of the project, new datasets will be identified and published and a new website with a functional data portal will allow a better communication at the regional level.
