Datos del proyecto

Biodiversity conservation is the greatest challenge to mankind as it becomes an integral part of economic and sustainable development. Many protected areas have been created to ensure the sustainable management and conservation of flora and fauna within their ecosystems. Therefore, W and Pendjari national parks of Benin were classified mainly for biodiversity conservation and of data on plants species and fauna were produced from different sources including annual wildlife census, forest inventories and thesis studies. However most of these data are still poorly published on the GBIF portal due to the lack of capacity in digitalizing and publishing data. Similarly, a number of studies have been carried out on some threatened plant species such as Afzelia africana Pers and a huge amount of information exist, but are still scattered on sheets, reports and thesis and not digitalized. Furthermore, there is a limited use of biodiversity data in the decision making process. Particularly, although, understanding the species ecological niche is crucial for the better design of reliable conservation plans integrating the potential suitable habitats, little is known of niche for many wildlife species and threatened species in Benin. In this project together with collaborators working in the national parks, we will increase data availability on protected area and threatened species as well. Then, the mobilized data and environmental data will be used to predict the potential suitable habitat for species. These results will be used by decision makers to design the suitable protected area network and enhance the species conservation actions

Descripción del área de estudio The project will be conducted in Benin which is located in West Africa, between latitudes 6ºN and 12º50N and longitudes 1ºE and 3º40’E. Benin lies between Nigeria on the east, Togo on the west, and is bordered by Burkina-Faso and Niger on the north. In the framework of the BID-AF2015-0030-SMA projet, data on animal and plant species data will be mobilized from two W and Pendjari national parks of Benin and also occurrence data on a Threatened species: Afzelia africana across all the Benin will be mobilized and published on GBIF website. The W National Park is located between in the Extreme Northeast between the latitudes 11º 26’-12º 26’ N; and the longitudes 2º17’- 3º 05’ E. It is part of the W transboundary Biosphere Reserve over Benin, Niger and Burkina Faso. The W National Park of Benin covers 563,280 ha. The National Park of Pendjari is located in the extreme Northwest of Benin and between the latitudes 10°30’ and 11°30’ N and the longitudes 00°50’ and 2°00’ E.
Descripción del diseño Mobilize data on animal species: These data will be mobilized from the various wildlife census reports, monitoring reports and field surveys. The data mobilization will be done with a full participation of the staff of Ecological monitoring office who is all collaborators of this project. They will facilitate and help to have access to archives and the pervious data collections sheets, inventories reports and studies on biodiversity that have been conducted on the wildlife of W and Pendjari National parks Parks. We will also visit university laboratories and libraries to seek for thesis on wildlife in W and in Pendjari National parks. A minimum of 3000 data on mammal species data including occurrence data and check list from sheet of wildlife census, reports, thesis. Data on plant species from forest inventory and studies will be also mobilized. Indeed several thesis and studies have described and provided plant species list including tree and herbaceous species for the W and Pendjari national parks. We will seek for reports of these studies and thesis either in the Parks libraries and archives, or in the laboratories and archives of the universities of Abomey-Calavi and University of Parakou. A total amount of 500 records data will be recorded on plant species from diverse sources. It will be essentially checklist and primary occurrence data of plant species from the two parks. Metadata will be thoroughly provided for each mobilized data. Data will be entered into an excel spreadsheet and then they will go through cleaning and quality control using Open Refine tool. Then, scientific names of the species, the family names and others information will be checked and corrected. Then, data will be described base on Darwin core following standards recommended by GBIF and TDWG. Then the data will be submitted to the GBIF node manager of Benin for validation before been published on GBIF portal. Afzelia africana Pers is a species which is now classified as vulnerable on the IUCN red list. Since then, the species has gained interest and many studies have been carried and much occurrence data have been collected through sample based studies, but not available online. For exemple there is ongoing project on conservation of Afzelia Africana which has already got much occurrence data of the species in the three main ecological zones of Benin. Other scientists have also worked on the species and held some occurrence data. I will get contact with them and mobilize occurrence data of Afzelia africana. I expect a total number of 500 records of occurrence data from an ongoing research project and others scientists working in Research institutes, laboratories or universities in Benin.
